Ron Arad
Architect and designer in London, England
"Post all and neo nothing." That's how Ron Arad himself defines the style of his London design studio, One Off, which he founded in the early 80s. A typical One Off creation was the "Rover Chair", a 60s car seat, acquired whenever possible from the local junkyard and then welden onto tubular steel frame. Each chair was then sold as a one off piece. Using such simple materials as spring-mattresses, foam, tin or steel and simple techniques based on Marcel Duchamp's principle of the "objet trouvé", Arad created such typical pieces as his famous concrete hi-fi stereo system. Arad has worked for such well-known clients as Driade, Moroso, Vitra and Zeus. Despite their martial appearance, his pieces are actually very comfortable. This can best be tested on one of his many chair designs. Alison Brooks has been Arad's partner since 1989 and is responsible for the studio's architectual projects. Arad and Brooks designed their milk glass together. From the outside all you can see are indecipherable lines, which can only be read from the inside: dedicated to the "holy cow" of design?
